I don’t know if class is going to be held tonight (all of this horrible frozen water falling out the sky!), but here is week two of Mystery & Horror Writing.
Today’s discussion is about monsters – the purpose monsters serve in fiction, and the many forms they can take. We’ll discuss last week’s readings, and our lists of things that make us afraid. We will also be discussing how to end a story.
Next week’s theme is “Body Horror,” and for it I’m assigning two stories and one nonfiction excerpt:
- Junji Ito’s “The Enigma at Amigara Fault”
- Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart”
- An excerpt from Julia Kristeva’s “Powers of Horror: An Essay on Abjection”
We’ll also be holding our first workshop next week.
